Where do you think the ego fits into the creative life style? I've recently begun mediation to discover what makes my creative process so painful, and I've discovered a lot of art is can be a validation quest or trap. I always had the philosophy that I was giving back to the world of fiction for giving me such a escape as a youth. But now I can see so much of this can be narcissistic. What do you think? Is the ego bad for art?

I think it’s a fine line. I think it’s important to have confidence that you can make good work. but also while remembering that drawing or writing well doesn’t make anyone better than anyone else.

I try to do the work I do mostly for myself, it’s the process that I enjoy, working through influences or shit in my life or just having fun making up things. or the collaboration.  Obviously I really like the interaction too, but that’s all frosting.

That’s too bad to hear that the process is painful for you. There’s that Thomas Mann quote “A writer is someone for whom writing is more difficult that it is for other people” — I like that. but also I think there’s a joy in the struggle. Like, It wouldn’t be worth it if it was always easy.

This is wonderfully said.  I think it’s true that there’s an underlying joy to the pain of creating something.  This also oddly seems related somehow to my Christianity.  Hm.

Anyway, thanks for the insight, Brandon.

Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira (1988)

I can find something to love in every scene of Akira (the falling glass, a bouncing helmet full of blood, lights appearing out of the silent darkness), but this is…this made a big impression on me as a kid. It’s still one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen, especially when combined with the previous moment, where Kaneda leaps off the back of someone else’s bike, hits the ground running, and then ruins this guy’s life. It’s so thugged out. This might’ve been The Moment of the movie for me.

Yup.

Daniel Warren Johnson came by last night to finish up the sketches for backer rewards at the “Together Forever” level.  He showed up with a Pink headband, which he claims ‘helps him make deadlines’.
We watched The Dirty Dozen (which Dan had never seen!?!?) and had some brew & pie.  I drew a drawing of Prophet, cuz you know… why not.
First round of packages have been sent out!  We’re working our way through the mailing list.  Thanks for your patience!

Had an awesome time sketching with Dan.  Its fun to work with other artists around and learn from eachother.  Mostly last night I was learning from Dan, as I was having a terrible drawing mojo day.
Dan blew my mind when he told me he’s never seen Evil Dead 2 or Army of Darkness.  We need to remedy this.
